The offer you’ll hear when you file
Somewhere in your first conversation with GEICO, the option will come up: bring the car to an Auto Repair Xpress location and the program takes it from there — inspection, repair at a participating shop, even the rental handoff, all in one stop. It is a genuinely smooth pitch, and for some situations a fair one. What the pitch tends to skip is the part Minnesota law insists on: this is an option you may take, not a step you must.
This guide covers what the program is, what you give and what you get by using it, and what the alternative looks like in practice. The blow-by-blow of filing a GEICO claim — documents, inspection, supplements — lives on our GEICO claims page, so we will stay out of its way here and stick to the choice itself.
How Auto Repair Xpress works
Auto Repair Xpress is GEICO’s direct-repair arrangement. Participating shops agree to the insurance company’s estimating and billing processes and its negotiated rates; in exchange they receive a steady referral stream, and repairs done through the program carry a guarantee backed by GEICO. From the customer’s side it behaves like a drop-off service: leave the car, collect a rental if your policy provides one, and pick the car up when the program says it is finished.
Notice what that structure is optimized for: administration. One intake, shared systems, no separate adjuster trip to schedule. Those are real efficiencies, and there is no need to pretend otherwise. They are also entirely about how the claim is processed. None of it says anything about how your particular car should be repaired, which parts belong on it, or who you would want making the close calls on a bigger hit.
Convenience is real — so is the trade
Using the program means accepting its frame: the shop comes from the participating list, the estimate is written inside GEICO’s process, and the shop’s ongoing business depends on the program relationship staying healthy. For a scraped bumper on a commuter car, you may reasonably not care about any of that. The car gets fixed, the logistics are painless, and the guarantee has a large company standing behind it.
The calculation changes as the damage grows. Structural repairs, blend decisions, and original-equipment parts questions involve judgment, and judgment tends to track accountability. An independent shop answers to the person who chose it — you — and to its own written warranty. We are not claiming network shops do worse work; plenty do fine work. We are claiming something narrower and more checkable: the two arrangements point a shop’s attention in different directions, and you are allowed to pick the direction that faces you.
Your other option: any Minnesota shop you trust
Minnesota Statute § 72A.201 forbids an insurance company from requiring a particular repair shop or pressuring you into one. Decline the Xpress offer, name your shop, and the claim proceeds — same coverage, same policy, same obligation to pay the reasonable cost of proper repair. Whether the shop you name is ours or another independent you trust, nothing about your benefits changes with the address on the repair order.
What changes is who runs the repair. Here, the car is photographed on arrival, torn down before the estimate is finalized, measured on the laser frame bench when the hit is structural, and refinished in a downdraft booth with the color read off your own paint. We deal with GEICO’s adjuster and any supplements directly, and you get one person to call the whole way through.
- Same policy benefits and the same deductible as inside the program
- Estimate written from teardown, not from across the parking lot
- Adjuster visits and supplement paperwork handled by the shop
- Written lifetime warranty on paint and refinish work
- One number to call — (651) 460-9996 — and one person on your file
Direction of pay, in plain language
People sometimes assume the network is where the money lives, and that an outside shop means fronting the whole cost and chasing reimbursement afterward. Not so. A direction-of-pay authorization — standard paperwork you sign at drop-off — tells the insurance company to pay the shop directly for the covered repair. It works at any shop in Minnesota, network or not, and it is how most independent-shop claims are paid.
Your deductible stays exactly what your policy says it is, at a program shop or here; a shop that promises to make it vanish is telling you something worth hearing about how it writes estimates. What we can honestly do is hand you the real number early — a free written estimate within an hour of seeing your photos — so that none of these decisions has to happen blind.
Where we stand with GEICO
Nowhere, formally — and that is the point of this section. Prime Auto Body is independently owned, is not part of Auto Repair Xpress, and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or approved by GEICO or any other insurance company. We use the program’s name here only to explain what it is. We have worked with every major insurance company since 2010, from the same shop in Savage, under the same owner.
If you have already filed and simply want out of the program funnel, that is allowed too. Tell the claims representative the car is going to Prime Auto Body, send us the claim number, and we will take it from there — including arranging the tow if the car cannot drive.
Estimates are free whether or not a claim ever gets opened, and the shop is easy to reach around a working schedule: Monday through Saturday, 9 AM to 11 PM, Sundays by appointment, at 8080 W 125th St Unit G in Savage. Bring the question before the car if you like — the conversation costs nothing either.
