A bumper is not a fender with a different shape

The answer is a flex additive mixed into the paint system, keeping the cured film elastic enough to move with the part.

Replacement covers arrive primed, but that factory primer still needs proper preparation before color, and repaired areas where plastic was sanded through need the promoter locally. When you see a late-model car with paint lifting off one bumper corner, you’re almost always looking at this step done wrong — not at bad paint.

Why bumpers can read a shade off — even from the factory

Here’s the part that surprises people: many new vehicles leave the assembly plant with bumpers that don’t perfectly match the body, because the covers are often painted separately — sometimes by a supplier, off the car, to the standard formula. Plastic and steel then present that formula slightly differently: different substrate, different primer underneath, different film behavior.
