Cloudy and cracked are different problems
Hazy, yellowed lenses are sun damage: UV breaks down the polycarbonate’s factory coating over years, and the cloudiness sits on the outer surface where abrasion can remove it. A crack, a shattered mounting tab, or fog on the inside of the lens is physical damage — the sealed housing has been breached, and no amount of polishing addresses that. After a front-end hit, check for both, because a collision can crack a lens that was already halfway to opaque.
The distinction decides the repair. Surface haze can be restored. A breached housing needs replacement, because everything that matters inside a modern headlight assumes a dry, sealed environment. Fog lamps and turn-signal housings follow the same logic, just with smaller parts and lower stakes.
Restoration: when polishing genuinely works
Headlight restoration is real, and the DIY kits work — wet-sanding the degraded coating off, polishing the plastic clear, then protecting it. That last step is the one kits shortchange: the factory UV coating you just sanded away was doing the protecting, so a restored lens without a new UV sealant clouds up again quickly. Done properly, with a durable coating applied after polishing, restoration buys meaningful clarity for a fraction of replacement.
Restoration makes sense on an intact, older lens. It makes no sense on a collision-damaged one — shining up a cracked housing is polishing a part that already needs to come off the car.
When replacement is the only honest answer
Cracks let moisture in, and moisture kills headlights slowly: condensation fogs the reflector, corrodes connectors, and shortens the life of bulbs and LED driver modules. Broken mounting tabs matter just as much — a headlight that cannot be located precisely will never aim correctly, and glued tabs rarely hold alignment through Minnesota potholes and cold snaps. If the housing is breached or will not mount solidly, replacement is the repair.
Why replacement quotes vary so widely comes down to what lives inside the unit. A basic halogen reflector lamp is a modest part; a full-LED, auto-leveling, or adaptive cornering unit is a small computer with optics, and the same model can carry either depending on trim. That is a parts reality, not shop mischief — and it is why we verify the exact unit by VIN before quoting anything.
Used headlights deserve a caution flag while we are here. A salvage-yard lamp can be a rational budget move on an older halogen car, but its tabs, seal, and lens coating carry unknown history, and complex LED units fail in ways a shelf inspection cannot catch. If budget forces the used route, it gets inspected before it gets installed — and we decline units that do not pass.
Aiming, adaptive units, and recalibration
Every replaced headlight needs to be aimed, and aim is set with the unit mounted on a straight, fully assembled front end — which is why lamp aiming is one of the last steps of front-end repair rather than the first. A light aimed high blinds oncoming traffic; aimed low, it throws away the distance vision you need at rural speeds. It gets checked, not assumed.
On vehicles where headlights interact with driver-assist systems — automatic high beams, adaptive beam shaping, camera-based leveling — the repair can also trigger recalibration for the cameras involved. What about the matching headlight?
Replacing one headlight raises a question nobody thinks of until the first night drive: the new unit is crystal clear, and the survivor has years of haze on it. The car now lights the road unevenly and looks mismatched from the front. Restoring the older lens while the vehicle is already in the shop is the cheap, sensible cure, and it is worth asking for by name.
Bulb color runs into the same issue on halogen cars — a fresh bulb beside an aged one reads as a mismatch even when both technically work, which is why replacing bulbs in pairs is standard advice. On LED units the color is fixed by the module, so that variable disappears; one of the quiet advantages of the newer lamps.
None of this is upsell theater. Headlights are a pair by design, and the goal of collision repair is a car that reads whole again, from the paint down to the beam pattern. We will also tell you when the second lens genuinely needs nothing — which is often.
The safety framing worth taking seriously
Headlights are the one collision part you rely on every night drive, and degraded output sneaks up on drivers because it fades gradually. After any front-end repair, the finished car should throw clean, even light with a crisp cutoff line — if it does not, something in the aim or assembly is off, and a good shop wants to hear about it. Take one night drive on a familiar road soon after pickup and pay attention to how far you can actually see; with deer on Minnesota shoulders every fall, that is the test that matters.
