Can any body shop repair a Tesla?
Quick answer
No — not every repair, and not at every shop. Tesla runs an approved collision center program and also operates its own body shops, and structural repairs, high-voltage battery work, and some parts route through that network. Independent shops can handle a range of cosmetic and bolt-on work when parts and procedures are available. The honest answer depends on the specific damage.
How Tesla structures collision repair
Tesla maintains a program of approved collision centers and also runs company-owned body shops. Approved status involves training, tooling, and equipment requirements set by Tesla, and it governs what a shop is authorized to do and, in practice, what it can obtain.
Several things are tied to that network. High-voltage battery service and pack handling are restricted. Certain structural repairs — particularly on models built with large single-piece castings and structural battery packs — have procedures that Tesla does not release for general repair, or that require tooling and authorization the program controls.
Parts are the other constraint. A significant share of Tesla parts are sold through Tesla’s own channel, and availability to a non-approved shop varies by part and by period. Diagnostic and configuration software access is likewise limited.
What an independent shop can generally do
Plenty of Tesla work is ordinary body work. Bumper covers, lamps, mirrors, wheel arch liners, and other bolt-on components are repaired or replaced conventionally, and refinishing a Tesla panel uses the same color matching, blending, and booth process as any other vehicle.
Non-structural panel repair and paint are the sweet spot for an independent shop, provided the parts can be sourced and the published procedure for the operation is available.
What an independent shop generally should not take on is anything involving the high-voltage pack, structural repair on castings or battery-integrated floors, and any operation whose procedure the manufacturer restricts.
Questions worth asking any shop before you hand over a Tesla:
- Are you a Tesla-approved collision center, or an independent shop
- Can you source the specific parts this repair needs, and how long will they take
- Do you have the published repair procedure for this operation on this model
- What happens if teardown finds structural or battery involvement
- Will any part of this repair have to be completed somewhere else
- Who calibrates the cameras and sensors, and will I get the scan results

What we do is look at the actual car, pull the published repair procedures, check what parts we can obtain, and give you a straight assessment: this is work we can do properly, or this belongs with Tesla’s network.
That conversation happens at the estimate, before you leave the vehicle. We would rather send you to the right place on day one than hold a car we cannot finish.
How to figure out which situation you are in
The dividing line is mostly structural versus cosmetic, and battery versus not. Use this as a rough guide, then confirm with a shop that will actually look at the car:
- Scuffed or cracked bumper cover, mirror cap, or trim — routine work for an independent shop
- Single-panel dent or scratch with no structural involvement — routine, subject to parts availability
- Door, fender, or liftgate replacement — usually workable, depending on parts access
- Any underbody, rocker, or floor impact — the pack has to be evaluated, and this likely belongs with the manufacturer’s network
- Any damage with a high-voltage warning, isolation fault, or coolant leak from the pack — manufacturer network
- Structural damage to castings or battery-integrated structure — manufacturer network
- Anything where the required procedure or part is not available outside the program — manufacturer network
Your rights, and what they do and do not cover
Minnesota Statute § 72A.201 makes it illegal for an insurance company to require you to use a particular repair shop or to pressure you toward one. That right applies to a Tesla exactly as it does to any other vehicle, and no adjuster gets to pick your shop.
What the statute cannot do is create access to parts, software, or procedures that a manufacturer controls. That is a practical constraint, not an insurance one, and it is the reason some Tesla repairs genuinely have to go where they have to go.
The useful takeaway: choose freely, but choose a shop that will tell you the truth about what it can and cannot do. Ask directly whether they are an approved center, whether they can source the parts your repair needs, and what happens if teardown finds structural involvement.
What this looks like for other EV brands
Tesla is the most-asked-about case, but the pattern is not unique. Several manufacturers restrict structural procedures, battery service, and some parts to their own certified networks, and most publish repair procedures that specify what may and may not be done outside them.
The right question for any EV is therefore the same: does this specific repair, on this specific vehicle, require access the shop does not have. A shop that answers that question honestly is worth more than a shop that says yes to everything.
Availability also shifts over time. Manufacturers change what they publish, what they sell outside their networks, and which repairs they permit, so the answer for a given model this year is not necessarily the answer from three years ago. That is a reason to ask about your specific car rather than rely on what someone told you about EVs in general.
