The boron steel safety cage is not repairable in the usual sense
Volvo builds its safety case around hot-formed boron steel, and it uses a great deal of it — the A-pillars, B-pillars, roof rails, tunnel and rocker reinforcements on the XC90, XC60 and S60 are formed and quenched in the press to a strength ordinary body steel cannot approach. That strength exists because of the manufacturing process, which means a torch, a heat gun or a hard pull removes it permanently and invisibly.
Volvo publishes structural repair methods that name the sectioning points where a part may be cut and the parts that must simply be replaced. There is no interpretation involved. We measure the vehicle on the laser system against Volvo’s dimensions, work to the published method, then re-measure and give you both readings — because on a car bought largely for its crash performance, that documentation is the point. People buy these cars for how they behave in a collision, and a repair that quietly removes that behavior is not a repair.
City Safety and the sensors behind the glass and grille
Volvo’s City Safety collision avoidance works from a forward-looking camera mounted high on the windshield together with radar at the front of the vehicle, with additional radar units at the rear corners handling blind spot information. Automatic emergency braking, pilot assist and lane keeping aid all read from that set, and all of it lives on the surfaces a collision touches first. A cracked grille and a working radar are not the same finding, even when they arrive on the same estimate.
Every Volvo here is scanned before teardown so the stored fault history is documented, and scanned again after reassembly so nothing new is left behind. Genuine parts are specified for grilles and bumper covers with sensors reading through them, calibrations Volvo publishes for the work performed are completed, and the car is road tested to confirm the systems arm normally before you get the keys.

Recharge plug-in hybrids add a step at the front of the job
Volvo’s Recharge plug-in hybrids carry a high-voltage battery packaged along the center of the car rather than under the seats, which puts it close to the tunnel and floor structure that a side impact loads. Before any welding, cutting or structural pulling in that area, the high-voltage system is shut down and given time to discharge, and the pack, its mounts and its cabling are inspected where the impact landed.
The rest of a Recharge repair is conventional — panels, structure, alignment, refinish — but the inspection is not something to skip because the outside of the car looks tidy. Anything we find in the high-voltage area gets written up and shared with you and your insurance company rather than being quietly built over, which is the only defensible way to hand a car like that back. Whatever we find goes in writing, whether or not it is convenient for anybody.
