Filing, and doing it from a distance
The claim opens the same way wherever you happen to be: your insurance company’s app, its website, or the number on your insurance card. Have the date and location, the other driver’s information, any police report number, and damage photos. If someone else was driving your vehicle, their details go on the claim too, and it helps to say up front who we should be speaking with about the repair.
Distance is workable. Estimates, teardown photos, and approvals go by email, approval can be given over the phone, and we can coordinate with a spouse, a parent, or a friend handling the car locally. Stated plainly: Prime Auto Body is an independent business with no affiliation to or endorsement from USAA, and the name appears here only to describe how a claim under that insurance company proceeds.
Minnesota protects your choice of repair shop
Minnesota Statute § 72A.201 makes steering an unfair claims practice. No insurance company may require a specific repair facility or lean on you to use one, and your policy covers the reasonable cost of restoring the vehicle to pre-accident condition at the shop you select. Recommendation lists are conveniences, not conditions.
That matters more than usual when a vehicle sits with family while the owner is elsewhere, because the path of least resistance becomes whatever the claims rep suggests to whoever answers the phone. One sentence from the policyholder naming the shop, given at the start, prevents a lot of back-and-forth later.
What we do with the car
Everything is photographed on arrival, and the damaged area is disassembled before the estimate is finalized so the plan is built on what is actually broken. The adjuster meets the vehicle here. Structural damage goes on the frame machine and is measured against manufacturer specification before and after any pull, with the readings kept in your file.
For an owner who is not standing in the shop, documentation is the whole relationship. You get the estimate in writing, photographs of anything teardown finds, a timeline, and a call before any change to the number or the date. Nothing is authorized on your behalf without you, or the person you have named, saying yes to it.
- Estimates, photos, and supplements sent by email for remote approval
- A named contact can drop off, approve, and collect on your behalf
- Teardown-first estimating so the plan reflects the real damage
- Laser measurement recorded before and after structural work
- Lifetime warranty on paint and refinish for as long as you own the vehicle
Supplements and short estimates
When a first estimate does not cover what the vehicle needs, we file a supplement with photographs of the damage in place, part numbers, and the operations required. Approved work carries on while the added lines are reviewed, so a pending item does not add a week to the schedule. If you are away, you receive the same documentation package the adjuster does.
On parts, Minnesota requires restoration to pre-accident condition with parts of like kind and quality, and you cannot be compelled to accept non-original parts outside of glass. We write OEM part numbers first with the justification attached — safety system, structural role, fit. Coverage is governed by your policy; what the repair requires is governed by the evidence in the file.
