Where the sensors live, and why bodywork touches them
Almost every driver-assist feature depends on a component mounted to a body panel. Forward radar sits behind the grille or inside the bumper. Cameras mount to the windshield, the grille badge, the mirrors, and the tailgate handle. Ultrasonic park sensors are pressed into the bumper covers themselves. A front-end hit that looks like a cosmetic bumper job has usually disturbed two or three of them. Most owners have no idea which ones, because these features are sold by name rather than by hardware.
What matters is aim. These systems judge distance and closing speed from a fixed viewpoint, so a sensor sitting a few millimeters off its designed angle reports the world slightly wrong. The car does not necessarily throw a warning light for it — it simply brakes late, or reads a lane line that is not there. That is why sensor position is treated as a repair operation rather than a reassembly detail.
How we handle them through a repair
Sensors and cameras come off before the panels do, stay with their brackets and hardware, and are transferred to the replacement part rather than forced into whatever position it happens to allow. Brackets are inspected as they come off — a cracked or bent bracket is replaced, because straightening one puts the sensor back at an angle nobody can verify. Connectors and harness routing go back the way the factory routed them. Routing is not cosmetic — a harness rerouted around a bracket can chafe through within a year, and a connector left half-seated reads as an intermittent fault nobody can reproduce.
Once the vehicle is together, every affected system is function-checked: warning lights cleared and confirmed clear, park sensors verified through their detection range, cameras checked for a clean and correctly framed image, and the vehicle scanned for stored fault codes. Where the manufacturer specifies a recalibration procedure for the work performed, that calibration is completed as part of the repair before the vehicle is delivered. It is not optional, and it is not something we leave for you to arrange at a dealership afterward.

What this means for your estimate and your insurance
Sensor work is a line item, and it belongs there. An estimate listing a bumper cover and paint but no sensor operations, on a vehicle with park assist and adaptive cruise, is not cheaper — it is incomplete. We write those operations in from the start with the reason attached, which is also what gets them approved when an insurance company’s first estimate leaves them out.
Ask any shop this before you leave the car: what happens to the driver-assist systems on my vehicle, and how will you verify they work when you are finished. The answer should be specific to your make and model, and it should end with a check you can see documented on the invoice. Ours does. A shop that has not thought it through will answer in generalities about putting everything back the way it came off.
