From the Hub district or Wood Lake, I-35W south to Highway 13 west is twenty to twenty-eight minutes. The honest part: the Bloomington collision cluster is closer, and if convenience is the only factor it wins. What it does not have is a shop with 110-plus Google reviews and not one of them below five stars. Richfield drivers who make the trip are usually the ones who have already tried closer.
The work that comes from Richfield skews small and cosmetic: a cover scraped on a ramp pillar, a door edged in a tight lot, a key line down a quarter panel. Those repairs are easy to do badly, because the cheap version — a spot patch with a soft edge — looks acceptable under shop lights and obvious in daylight a week later. Ramp damage is also the kind people put off, which gives an exposed edge a whole winter to get worse.
Bumper covers are plastic, and plastic paints differently
A bumper cover is flexible plastic, not steel, and paint has to be persuaded both to stick to it and to move with it. That means a different prep: cleaning off mold release and road film, an adhesion step made for plastic substrates, and a flexible additive in the material so a parking-lot flex does not crack the finish. Skip any of it and the paint lets go at the first cold snap. Minnesota gives that failure plenty of chances between November and April.
Covers also come off the car to be sprayed. On a stand, the upper reveal, the lower valance, and the wrap around the wheel opening all get sprayed square rather than at a scraping angle, and the inside edges are covered instead of masked. The cover is refitted afterward and blended into the fenders or quarters it meets, so there is no hard line at the gap.
Scuffs, key marks, and the deductible question
A key line that has gone through the clear cannot be polished out — polishing removes clear, and there is none to spare over a scratch that deep. The panel gets sanded, primed where the scratch reached metal, then refinished in full and blended into the panel beside it. A spot repair in the middle of a door is visible from the moment the sun hits it at an angle. Key lines that cross two panels get both panels refinished, since paint that stops at a gap is the same mistake in a different place.
