The Audi Space Frame is not a steel unibody with aluminum panels
Audi has built multimaterial bodies for decades, and the A8 is the clearest example: an Audi Space Frame combining aluminum extrusions and castings with hot-formed steel, magnesium and carbon reinforcement in the same structure. The Q5, A4 and A6 use aluminum selectively for closures and front-end components. A single damaged corner can therefore involve two or three materials that each demand a different joining method. Assuming an Audi is a steel car wearing aluminum skins is the most common way one of these repairs goes wrong.
Aluminum sections are riveted and bonded rather than spot welded, extrusions have defined cut points or none at all, and heat is not a tool on this kind of structure. We identify what each damaged member actually is during teardown, pull Audi’s procedure for that part, and quote from that. Laser readings are recorded before and after any structural correction and supplied with the invoice. Where a section cannot be repaired at all, you hear it early rather than halfway through the job.
The four rings sit in front of the radar
Audi pre sense uses a forward camera at the windshield along with radar behind the Singleframe grille — on many models directly behind the rings emblem, which is built as a radar-transparent cover. Side assist radars sit behind the rear bumper corners. A parking-lot tap on an A4 rear bumper and a highway front-end hit both put sensors out of position, and neither one necessarily lights a warning on the drive home.
Every Audi here is scanned before teardown and after reassembly, with both reports kept in the file and shared with your insurance company. Genuine Audi parts are specified for grilles, emblems and bumper covers with sensors behind them, mounting brackets go back to their original locations, and calibrations Audi publishes for the work performed are completed before delivery. Audi drivers notice when adaptive cruise starts behaving differently, and by then the car has usually been out of a shop for weeks.
- Each damaged member identified by material before the estimate is finalized
- Aluminum joined by rivet and adhesive per Audi’s published specification
- Rings emblem and grille specified as genuine parts in the radar path
- Side assist radars in the rear bumper function-checked after rear repairs
Audi color: flat grays and deep pearls, both difficult
Audi’s signature colors run to two extremes that both punish shortcuts. The flat grays — Nardo and its relatives — carry almost no metallic to hide anything, so every wave in a repaired panel and every variation in film build reads at a glance. The deep pearls and reds go the other way, layering translucent color over a base where the pass count sets how dark the panel finishes.
Both get the same discipline: bodywork brought properly flat before primer, a spray-out card built the way the car will be built, comparison against your panel under booth light and outside, and the color blended into the neighboring panels so there is no edge at the door gap. The refinish carries our lifetime paint warranty for as long as the Audi is yours. Nothing about that warranty depends on where the car was bought.
